Why can’t our printers be as easy to use as our mobile phones?
We think they can—and should!—and that’s the foundation of our thinking at Samsung Printing Solutions. We also think that users should be able to customize their printers, because every office is different.
That’s why we took a big step forward in 2014 and introduced the Smart Multifunction Printer series, the world’s first printers with an Android-based user experience. We called it our Smart UX Center and with it, we proved that great user experiences aren’t just for smartphones alone and that users should be able to use various apps on printers as well.
The feedback from our partners was very positive, especially for the range of in-house apps that we launched to support the new user interface. But, we did not want to stop there. We wanted to offer more customization that goes beyond those.
And that was the beginning of the Samsung Smart UX Software Developer Kit (SDK), providing the ultimate in extensibility.
Smartify Your Office with Apps Currently Available in the Smart UX Center
With its simple and intuitive interface, the 10.1 color touch screen that we placed on our Smart MFP lines in 2014 has already revolutionized how our customers integrate their printers into their office work flows. Users can choose from ten apps and two widgets to download and install directly to their printer. Here are three key examples.
1. Workbook Composer
The Workbook Composer App lets users select one part of the document and manipulate it in a variety of ways. Once isolated, the section can be printed, cut entirely, saved to a folder, or even emailed. This app is particularly handy in educational and legal settings when making a test using a variety of sources, or compiling information scattered in various files.
2. HanCom Office
Users don’t have to return to their printer to correct document errors. The HanCom Office App gives them the power to view and edit files from the MS Office suite right at the printer on the 10.1-inch tablet screen.
3. Smart Color Manager
The Smart Color Manager App gives users quick access to color settings right on the printer. It’s especially convenient for firms that use their office printer for brochures or other design tasks. It lets users check and fine tune the color table before printing. They can also create and save various color profiles, including for their company’s commonly used color schemes.
Samsung’s Smart UX Software Developer Kit Brings a New Paradigm to Printer Functionality
Because we wanted to go beyond and explore the possibilities of printer functions to the fullest,
we designed our Smart UX SDK to provide a comprehensive suite of features to application developers so they can integrate functionalities like copying, scanning, and printing into Android application securely.
Using the Smart UX Simulator, they can confidently explore a broad range of options using sample scenarios and get a good read on efficacy before submitting it for testing and evaluation to our Samsung Printing App Center, where their creation will eventually reside alongside all our in-house apps.
*Developers can download the package at Samsung Developer Site.
Key Benefits of the App Center and Smart UX SDK
The bottom line goal of this broader range of APIs is to expand the ability of our end-users to optimize and customize their printing operations, extending the native functionality of their printer to meet their specific needs and raising productivity overall in their respective market verticals. It can even help reduce downtime caused by complex and risky firmware upgrades. In the future, for example, they might only need to download and install an app.
There’s something for resellers, too, because now they’ll be able to consult with their clients more closely and provide tailored solutions to meet their individual needs. For independent software developers, the new SDK will give them the confidence they need to create new and meaningful applications that add printer functionality.
