- All industries show highest intention to use fleet management solutions, while intention to use other solutions vary by industry
- Solution “robustness” and “customization” are weighed over initial purchasing cost as key buying factor
- Samsung aims to maximize printing cost savings in all industries through pre-sales consultation and diverse solutions portfolio
Samsung Electronics’s recent survey on preferences and key buying factors for printing solutions reveals that across four different industries – legal, insurance, university, and ad/media – cost-effectiveness is the primary consideration. According to survey results, 33% of the participants intend to adopt fleet management solutions that directly reduce printing costs, more than any other type of solution. Intention to use other, productivity-oriented solutions varied by each industry’s workflows.
The survey was conducted on 660 IT decision makers (ITDM) in industries with high volumes of MFP printing. With the survey, Samsung aims to predict future growth areas and determine key buying factors of four different types of printing solutions – fleet management, document distribution, document management, and output management. The company plans to use the survey results as the foundation for expanding its printing solutions portfolio.
“Cost-reducing” fleet management solutions record highest intention to use
Fleet management solutions enable ITDMs to comprehensively monitor and manage their company’s printing practices. With them, ITDMs can proactively monitor device usage and encourage cost-conscious printing habits, as the solutions allow ITDMs to control access to print devices and monitor printing/scanning volume and supplies status. The demand for fleet management can be seen as a reflection of the shared objectives by all industries to cut costs. The ad/media sector has the highest demand (44.5%) for the fleet management solutions among the four industries, higher by 10 to 15%, due to its frequent color printing and printing supplies replacement.
Intention to use other types of solutions varies by industry-specific workflows
The survey also reveals that different industries have different sets of preferences for solutions based on their respective printing workflows. In insurance, where users handle clients’ personal information, output management was favored for its security and monitoring features (23%). In legal, where users need to scan and sort documents by high volumes, output management solutions—as well as document distribution solutions—were preferred (23%). In the university sector, there was no preference for one particular solution, due to the wider variety of users (e.g. students, staff, administrators) compared to other sectors. However, in some departments such as the admissions office, preference for document distribution solutions was high (30%), considering their usefulness in processing applications. In ad/media, where users deal with frequent revision requests, the preferred solution was document management, which allows them to easily sort revised versions of a document.
Long-term value prioritized over initial purchasing cost
The key buying factors for printing solutions were generally the same for all industries, with the most ITDMs choosing “robustness” and “customization” and the least choosing “initial purchasing cost” as the priority. This shows that users focus more on the long-term value of enhanced productivity that comes from reduction of downtime from system repair and optimization of the MFP function.
Exceptionally, “ease of usability” was heavily considered by ITDMs in education sector (48%), and this was greater by 7% to 24% than other industries. This anomaly seems to arise from the different level of knowledge in printing solutions that the wide range of users in education have.
Further diversified printing solutions with strategic pre-sales consultation
The survey was part of Samsung’s effort to expand the B2B business, with the Samsung Printing Solutions business department at the center. Samsung Printing Solutions is gaining positive feedbacks from its clients with specialized solution portfolio and offering of customizations based on pre-sales consultation.
David SW Song, Senior Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Sales at Samsung Printing Solutions, noted that, “Due to the global recession, our clients want to reduce management costs through printing solutions. Yet, we discovered that both industry-relevant solutions development and cost reduction features are equally important to our customers. Based on the cumulated research and study, we will create a holistic printing solution that both enhance workflows and cost-efficiency.”
