Today, more and more people are connected through mobile devices, and the concept of an office is no longer limited to physical space. With increasing digitization and the rise of the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend, paper processes have become electronic; so then why are most modern offices still relying heavily on hard copies?
According to a report by The Economist on the evolution of a wireless workplace, printers and scanners are considered an important part of the office experience by 81% of employees. However, according to a 2015 IDC study, 35% of smartphone users and 34% of tablet users want to print via mobile device but cannot do so because of usage barriers like complicated installation and device connection.
Samsung recognizes this need for mobile printing. As a leader of mobile technology, we took initiatives to increase awareness of mobile printing and remove barriers to widen its accessibility. An example of our efforts in standardizing mobile printing is our commitment as one of the founding members of the Mopria™ Alliance.
Mopria™ Alliance, standardizing mobile printing
Mopria™ Alliance is a non-profit membership organization comprised of leading global technology companies unified by the single goal of standardizing mobile printing. Founded in September 2013 by major printing companies, including Canon, HP, and Xerox, and of course, Samsung, the Alliance works to remove barriers between brands to eliminate the need for users to install multiple print drivers; provide an easier and more convenient mobile printing experience; increase mobile printing usage by educating end-users; and support mobile software developers/providers in adding print functions on their apps.
To standardize mobile printing, Mopria™ Alliance develops technical prototypes, conducts product testing, and certifies qualified products. Mopria™ Alliance also offers the Mopria Print Service, a printing software plugin for smartphones with Android 4.4 or later. The plugin adds a native printing feature to Android devices, enabling printing when the mobile device is linked to a printer through a wireless or network connection.
Currently, there are more than 1,000 Mopria certified products from over 18 brands, and is growing at a fast rate. The certification offers benefits to all stakeholders in the industry:
- For printing companies: With Mopria’s standardized mobile printing, printer manufacturers do not need to worry about updating their firmware or software to enable easy mobile printing.
- For users: With the Mopria Print Service installed on their mobile devices, users can connect wirelessly and print to Mopria certified printers without installing any software or manually connecting to a printer, regardless of the brand.
- For mobile device manufacturers: There is no longer a need for mobile device manufacturers to collaborate with printer manufacturers to enable printing services on their mobile devices.
- For application designers and developers: With Mopria’s software development kit (SDK) and APIs, app developers can easily add a printing feature to mobile applications to increase productivity.
Samsung Printing Solutions, removing the barrier to mobile printing
Currently, ninety-one Samsung printers are Mopria certified. From the most recently released entry-level A4 laser printers like the Xpress M4030ND to high-specification A3 copiers like the MultiXpress X7600LX, a wide range of Samsung printers are Mopria certified.
In addition to being an active member of the Mopria™ Alliance, Samsung Printing Solutions puts in continuous efforts to innovate new mobile printing technologies. Samsung launched the first printer with NFC printing technology in 2014. It also created mobile and cloud printing apps, such as Samsung Mobile Print™ and Samsung Cloud Print™. Furthermore, Samsung has acquired PrinterOn, the industry leader in cloud printing, to improve internal mobile printing software and solution technologies. With this acquisition and further R&D efforts, all of Samsung printers in speed segment 3 or higher are now equipped with PrinterOn mobile printing software.
Samsung Printing Solutions has been investing in expanding the modern printing ecosystem. With our prowess in semiconductor and mobile technology, we continue to create high-performance products and innovative solutions to change the printing paradigm. Participation in the Mopria™ Alliance is just one of many efforts to meet the various printing needs in today’s increasingly mobile working environment.
